My name is Josephine Perry and I sew things. Having recently become a parent and relocated to the North West I’m based at home, stitching away while the little one naps, from sewing tutorials to my latest venture Our Josephine for kids.
I have always been creative; I was constantly making things as a child, admiring my mum’s sewing skills and attempting to emulate her talent. As a teen I painted slogans on t-shirts and hammered metal studs into jersey tops — creating clothes that I could never actually wear. Then I became a school teacher, and the only sewing I did was a little repairing and some upcycling here and there. Somewhere in the middle of my twenties, something changed, and I went back to craft.
Now I endeavour to do things properly, learning new sewing skills all the time, always wanting to make things with more competence and to pass on the techniques that I have learned in an enthusiastic way. I sew things for the home, make accessories and gifts and I am developing my dressmaking repertoire. I sometimes make for retail under the name Our Josephine; a personal highlight was having my handmade Christmas stockings on sale at the Liberty Christmas Shop in 2012. Most recently this has developed into Our Josephine for kids, a range of handmade frocks; available through my Etsy shop.
The Sewists appeared on bookshelves in 2014, featuring 20 projects from wonderfully talented designer-makers. All of the skills involved a needle and thread and each craft I encountered inspired me to want to make more. Researching, writing and styling the book was a great experience and something I’d love to do again.
With my teaching hat on I’ve worked with a range of great establishments including Fringe, Homemade London and Sally Bourne The Workshop. I have also had the pleasure of creating and delivering workshops for Liberty Sewing School as a Rowan tutor.
Sharing my knowledge and encouraging others to get involved in making is a real pleasure. Please do give my tutorials a whirl and let me know how you get on.
